Once I removed that I’ve not run into any serious problems. What I later discovered was that the NVSR (new vegas stutter remover) wasn’t playing nice with a recent Win.

I even switched from Vortex to FOMM (fallout mod manager) thinking that it might be the cause of my problems. When I started modding New Vegas to begin with I was experiencing a bunch of crashes and couldn’t figure out what was making my game so unstable.

If you’re curious about the mods I’m using, I’ve listed them below. My character isn’t the strongest or most charming in the wasteland but she’s good with a gun and can repair most anything with the proper materials. The most ambitious mod I’m using is probably Cirosans Classic Overhaul which seeks to rebalance the game in a way that discourages mix-maxing and instead gives more options to create a specific character build. I wanted to keep the experience as close to the original as far as the narrative goes, and to only give the other areas of the game little tweaks to make them feel slightly more contemporary. The mods I’m using are a mix of visual enhancements (higher res textures, lighting changes, u.i improvements, etc) and some rebalancing to the gameplay. This butch cowgirl’s ready win big at New Vegas and to punch any fascist she meets in the teeth. After a couple of head-scratching issues I’ve gotten my game to a place that I’m happy with!

I have no idea if this works for Fallout, but it’s probably worth at least trying before reinstalling. So I finally spent the last week or so modding New Vegas in preparation for playing it over the winter break. It recommends holding down “A” when the game loads until the Bethesda logo appears which apparently clears some sort of cache, fixing the issue for some Oblivion players. I later came across this post which may have saved me the trouble of reinstalling. When I started the back game back up, not only were the textures and shaders correct, but I had also fixed an occasional crasher I got when the New Vegas launcher started up (which I believe had to do with the detection of DirectX).

I fixed it by uninstalling New Vegas and Steam (I could have probably just uninstalled the game, but I wanted to be 100% certain), getting all my video drivers and settings properly tweaked (including the newest version of DirectX), and reinstalling. The mod includes new hair styles, eye textures and of course facial textures, making each character look more lifelike, as well as more hardy and gritty - which is fitting. You even get to choose between dirty desert teeth and Cast Of Friends teeth. For characters, I went with Fallout Character Overhaul, a modular package which upgrades faces, hair, eyes and other elements and doesnt appear to be too exaggerated. As you can see from the picture above, poor Doc Mitchell was the first victim. Enter the Fallout Character Overhaul to not only add some much-needed soul to New Vegas NPCs, but actually make the game give Fallout 4 character faces a run for their money. Its not revelatory really, but it definitely knocks a couple of years off the old man. Unfortunately, I installed both Steam and New Vegas before I finished tweaking my video drivers which resulted in some very bizarre purple/pink textures or shaders. The first game I decided to play after building a new gaming PC was Fallout: New Vegas.
